West Bromwich Albion are working on alternative targets after Karlan Grant and Josh Maja's contracts expire. The club's contract offers landed with the attacking duo some time ago.
What happened?
Albion are expecting the duo to move on from The Hawthorns. Grant, 28, and Maja, 27, are out of contract this summer with Tuesday the final day of their deals.
Why it matters for West Bromwich Albion
The club confirmed their retained list in mid-May and said they had offered deals to Maja and were “in dialogue” with Grant. But the Baggies are understood to be pressing ahead with recruitment work on the basis that the pair move on. Attackers have already checked into James Morrison’s squad in the form of Falkirk’s Barney Stewart, 22, and 21-year-old Jimmy-Jay Morgan from Chelsea.
| Player | Age | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Barney Stewart | 22 | £1.3m |
| Jimmy-Jay Morgan | 21 | £1.3m |
What comes next?
More attackers will follow suit with Albion relaxed on the situation and working on freshening up Morrison’s options in the final third. Former club captain Jed Wallace departed the club this summer at the end of his contract, as did striker Daryl Dike. Terms were offered to left-sided attacker Grant, who has spent six seasons at the club, and centre-forward Maja, who joined in 2023. As of 30 Jun 2026, West Bromwich Albion sit 21st in the Championship with 51 points from 46 games, having scored 48 goals and conceded 58. The club are 44 points behind leaders Coventry. Albion’s remaining senior forward options include Aune Heggebo, Isaac Price, Mikey Johnston and new boys Stewart and Morgan. Within those are Heggebo, Stewart and Morgan who play in central forward areas and Price and Johnston whose preference is wide, though some have more versatility. Albion are likely to further strengthen in wide areas given the departure of Wallace and expected Grant exit.
