West Bromwich Albion have parted company with first-team head coach Eric Ramsay after a little over six weeks in charge of the struggling Championship club. A 1-1 draw at home to Charlton Athletic on Tuesday stretched West Brom’s winless run to nine games in all competitions under Ramsay and saw the former Minnesota United manager’s tenure at the club curtailed. Assistant head coach Dennis Lawrence has also departed The Hawthorns. Ramsay was appointed in mid-January on a two-and-a-half-year contract following Ryan Mason’s dismissal with West Brom languishing 18th in the second tier. The former Manchester United coach came highly regarded having impressed in MLS, where he led Minnesota United to back-to-back Conference play-off semi-finals and took the team to fourth in the Western Conference last season. Yet his appointment did not have the desired effect at West Brom, who have slipped further towards trouble in the period since. He saw his side beaten 3-2 by Middlesbrough in his first game in charge, and capitulate 5-0 to Norwich City in his second — the club’s heaviest home defeat outside the top flight. Indeed, George Campbell’s opener against Charlton on Tuesday was the only time they even led in a game under the 34-year-old. Charlton duly equalised in the second half through Lyndon Dykes to leave West Brom without a league win in 10, stretching back to December 29. They sit 21st in the division, a point clear of Leicester City who occupy the third of the relegation places. “The question around my job and the future is never one I can ever answer or attempt to answer,” Ramsay told BBC Radio West Midlands after the game at The Hawthorns, before confirmation of his sacking had been delivered. “I can only do what I can do over the course of a day and put my head on the pillow at night feeling I’ve turned over every stone. “I’m not saying I’m blameless — I can only feel I’ve controlled what I can control.” First-team coach James Morrison will oversee the team on an interim basis while the club look to make their fourth permanent appointment in the last 14 months to steer them clear of trouble.
