Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Quevin Castro died on Saturday morning at the age of 25 after collapsing 10 minutes into a friendly match in Portugal. He was playing for Real Massama against Estrela de Amadora when he fell to the ground. Medical teams from both sides rushed onto the pitch, and a defibrillator was used, but attempts to resuscitate the 25-year-old were unsuccessful. Castro was taken to hospital, where he was declared dead. The match between Real Massama and Estrela de Amadora was subsequently postponed.

Estrela da Amadora issued a statement expressing its deepest sorrow for the passing of Quevin Castro, player for Real Massama. The club extended heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the entire Real Massama structure. Social media tributes poured in from former fans and clubs. Lucha Libre posted a message noting that Castro had played for West Bromwich Albion and had suffered a health issue during a preseason friendly in Malveira, Portugal. Eastbourne Borough wrote that it was devastated by the passing of former player Quevin Castro, and the club’s thoughts were with his family.

West Bromwich Albion released a tribute on its social media. The club announced that it would pay tribute to Castro on Sunday, with a period of applause in the 25th minute of the fixture against Burnley. James Morrison’s men will also wear black armbands in his honour.

Quevin Castro joined West Bromwich Albion as a teenager in 2021. He made his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal and his maiden league outing in February 2022. Castro scored in the Premier League Cup final triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers three months later. He had loan spells at Burton, Notts County and Gateshead before departing The Hawthorns in the summer of 2023.

After leaving Albion, Castro spent time at York City, King’s Lynn, Chippenham, Cambridge City and Eastbourne before returning to Portugal to play for Real Massama. He was a product of the Sporting CP youth academy and signed his first professional contract with Thetford Town in 2017. He also played for Mildenhall Town, Leiston, Bury Town and Norwich CBS before signing for West Bromwich Albion in 2021.
