West Bromwich Albion are set to face Burnley at The Hawthorns in the Sky Bet Championship on Sunday. The Baggies have not managed to beat Burnley in any of their last seven games against them, but have only lost twice in that run.

What happened?

The two teams have a long history, with Sunday's clash being the 138th between two of the founding members of the Football League. Albion have the slightly better record with 56 wins to the Clarets' 47. There have also been 34 draws. The Baggies have lost just one of their last 15 home matches against Burnley in all competitions - a 2-1 setback in the Premier League in March 2018. It's a sequence which stretches back to 1969. Albion have won nine and drawn five of the other 14. The Clarets are, however, unbeaten at The Hawthorns since 2016.

Why it matters for West Bromwich Albion

Albion will be going in search of consecutive victories at the start of a Sky Bet Championship campaign for the second year running. The Baggies beat Blackburn Rovers and Wrexham in their first two second-tier fixtures of the 2025/26 term. James Morrison will be defending his unbeaten managerial record at The Hawthorns this weekend. He's helped the Baggies pick up three wins and four draws in his seven previous matches in charge at the club's home stadium. Albion have the chance to win three successive games in all competitions for the first time since a run of four straight wins between August and September in 2024. As of the final 2025 table, West Bromwich Albion stood 21st in the Championship with 51 points from 46 games, having won 13, drawn 14, and lost 19, with a recent form of LDWWD.

What comes next?

Burnley have won promotion to the Premier League in all of the last four seasons in which they've competed in the Championship. The Clarets secured the title in 2015/16 and 2022/23, and finished the 2013/14 and 2024/25 terms as runners-up. No Sky Bet Championship player had more shots on the opening weekend of the season than Burnley's Zian Flemming. The Dutchman had nine attempts and scored two goals against West Ham United. The Clarets are chasing their first win since February 11, 2026 - a 3-2 Premier League triumph at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace. They've not won any of their last 15 matches in all competitions. Burnley do, however, boast an incredible unbeaten run in the Sky Bet Championship. They've gone 34 second-tier fixtures without suffering a defeat, with the first of those coming at The Hawthorns when they drew 0-0 with the Baggies on November 7, 2024. The last team to beat the Clarets in the Championship were Millwall on November 3, 2024. With 48 goals scored and 58 conceded, West Bromwich Albion have a goal difference of -10, and are 44 points behind leaders Coventry in the title race. The Baggies will look to improve their standing and continue their unbeaten run at home under James Morrison's management.
